Juice vs. Whole Fruit

It is important to think about the difference between fruit juice and fruit itself before diving into juice for kidney disease.

Fruit is used to make fruit juice. All of the fiber is left behind when you juice fruit. Fiber slows sugar absorption and controls blood sugar spikes after you eat. Fiber is important for a number of health conditions. Fruit juice is less healthy than whole fruit because of the lack of fiber.

It is easy to drink more fruit in the form of juice, compared to eating whole fruit. It takes a lot of fruit to make a small glass of juice. It’s easier to go over the sugar with this.

Best Juice for Kidney Disease

It’s not a must have on a diet for people with a renal condition. Fruit is a better choice than alcohol.

If you love juice, it can be a part of a diet that is friendly to the kidneys.

It is important to find juice that is 100% fruit juice. There is a lot of added sugar in juices.

It’s important to remember that even 100% juice has a lot of sugar in it, without all of the wonderful fiber to help reduce blood sugar spikes. You should keep your portion to 4 fluid ounces or a 1/2 cup.

Here are some juices that are good for your body. All of the juices have less than 200mg of potassium per 1/2 cup serving.

  • There is apple juice that has 125mg of potassium.
  • There is grape juice with a high amount of potassium.
  • There is pineapple juice with 161mg of potassium.
  • Cranberry juice contains 96mg of potassium.
  • There is a lot of juice from the grapefruit
  • The juice is composed of beet juice.
  • There is pear juice with 161mg of potassium.
  • There is a peach nectar with a high amount of potassium.
  • There is a mango nectar with 30mg of potassium.
  • Papaya has 38mg of potassium in its body.

The amount of potassium is 4 fluid ounces (1/2 cup). It is possible that the brand of juice has a different amount of Potassium.

I also love lemon and lime juice for kidney disease! These juices are not necessarily good for your kidneys – nor would I recommend drinking a glass of them! But, they are a wonderful way to add flavor to food without salt. A low sodium diet is important for nearly everyone with kidney disease.

High Potassium Juices

Some people with kidney disease need to limit potassium. But, not everyone does!

If you have high blood potassium, you should avoid these high juices. All of the juices have more than 200mg of potassium per 1/2 cup serving.

The juices above are equally good if you don’t have high potassium.

  • There is orange juice with a high amount of potassium.
  • Prune juice has 342mg of potassium in it.
  • There is a fruit called a Pomegranate that has a high amount of potassium.
  • There is cherry juice with a high amount of potassium.
  • Potassium varies but is usually high in the green juices.

The amount of potassium is 4 fluid ounces (1/2 cup). It is possible that the brand of juice has a different amount of Potassium.

Juice to Avoid for Kidney Disease

Large Amounts of Any Kind of Juice

There is a bit of sugar in 100% juice. There could be a lot of potassium.

Limit your juice portion to 4 fluid ounces or a 1/2 cup, no matter what kind of juice you drink.

Tomato & Vegetable Juices

Tomatoes and vegetable juices have a high amount of salt in them, which is surprising. A can of V8 vegetable juice has over a thousand calories in it. This is less than the amount of salt you should eat in an entire day.

Vegetables with low levels of sodium are pretty salty. A can of low sodium V8 juice has 200mg of sodium. This is much lower than the original version, but still has a high amount of daily sodium. I don’t know about you, but I would rather eat my salt in other ways.

Most Green Juices or Smoothies

The juice made from green veggies can have high levels of the mineral. What is it about this? It comes down to the size of the portion. Think about how much juice is required to get a single glass of juice. This is likely a lot more than you would eat in a single day. The amount of vegetables in green smoothies can be quite a bit too.

Even though not everyone with kidney disease needs to limit potassium, green juices and smoothies can have such high amounts of potassium, I recommend everyone with kidney disease avoid them.

Oxalate in Green Juice or Smoothies

In addition, many green juices are made with ingredients that are very high in oxalate such as spinach, beets and almonds. Oxalate is a molecule that is most known for it’s role in kidney stones. In addition to kidney stones, high levels of oxalate in your urine can damage kidneys.

Oxalate management is difficult because not all bodies have the same handling of oxalate. There are differences in how much oxalate is absorbed from food and how much is produced in the body.

The majority of people don’t have a problem with oxalate in normal amounts. It’s a good food that is healthy. If you have high levels of oxalate in green juices or smoothies, it can be problematic and hurt your kidneys.

Juice Detoxes & Cleanses

Although a small glass of juice can be a part of a diet that is friendly to the kidneys, juice should never be used in place of an entire meal. It’s even worse if it’s in place of food for an entire day.

Unfortunately, many juice detox and cleanse regimens claim to be good for you. Even worse, many claim to be good for your kidneys. No detox or cleanse will help your kidneys. In fact, many of these detox regimens can hurt your kidneys. I recommend avoiding these “quick fixes” at all costs.

Grapefruit Juice (for some)

Many people who have kidney disease also have high cholesterol. If you take a statin, a medication commonly prescribed to lower cholesterol, you should avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice. An enzyme found in grapefruit can change how your body processes statin medications.

Is Cranberry Juice Good For Kidney Disease?

It is believed that cranberry juice is good for your kidneys. There have been no studies done to see if cranberry is good for the kidneys.

Some small studies have shown that cranberry supplements may prevent urinary tract infections.(1) However, more research should be done before conclusions can be made. I would recommend cranberry supplements (from a reputable company!) over cranberry juice if you choose to use cranberry for urinary tract infections.

Cranberry juice and supplements have been studied to help kidney stones. But, results have been mixed. Some studies found cranberry juice helpful, whereas others found it harmful. (2) (3) (4) Cranberry is not recommended for kidney stones.
